Cinesite's talented team of compositors and animators are responsible for some of the most spectacular sequences in modern cinema. We develop ideas from storyboards and scripts, working with clients at the earliest stages of production, writing bespoke software to create the most innovative visual effects sequences.

Along with our highly creative and customisable approach to each job, we provide a unique and comprehensive range of services. This affords our clients a seamless flow between physical effects, film scanning and recording, digital effects, visual effects supervision, model construction and unit photography. Our knowledge of all areas of visual effects means that we are able to offer highly original and cost-effective production solutions.

Cinesite creates highly memorable and award-winning visual effects for television. Expertise founded in creating some of the most stunning effects sequences in modern cinema is used by television productions all over the world.  Our work on 2008 HBO series Generation Kill and Into The Storm was nominated for an Emmy in July 2009. Previously, Cinesite was awarded an Emmy award in 2006 for HBO series Rome, in the category Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Series.

Our creation of innovative tracking systems, workflow software and production management has lead to our growth into one of the largest facilities in Europe, with the capacity and know-how to manage major productions with large and complex visual effects quotas.

Cinesite provides highly adaptable scanning and recording services for feature films, trailers and commercials. Our service forms a vital part of the digital intermediate and visual effects pipeline for companies all over the world. We scan from either 35mm or 16mm and record from any data source.

As a Kodak company, Cinesite understands the idiosyncrasy of film emulsions. As a cutting edge digital imaging company, we are also pioneers in digital processing technologies. This unique combination gives us unprecedented knowledge and expertise in the merging of these two complementary technologies.

h3. Super2K

Our universally admired &quot;super2K&quot; process ensures the very best 2K scanning and recording for the ultimate quality in the most manageable file size.

This proprietary process gives film-makers the superior quality of 4K scanned or recorded images, whilst only having to deal with a normal 2K sized file. In simplest terms, this involves scanning images at over 4,000 lines of resolution and downsizing to approximately 2,000 lines. While much of the original 4K image quality is retained, file sizes are far more manageable.

Cinesite's proprietary process also converts the images back up to 4K in the recording process. Most importantly, practically no difference in quality is discernible between a full 4K pipeline and one using &quot;super2K&quot; images.

In addition, our image engineers are constantly pioneering innovative new code to optimise image quality.

h3. History

Cinesite has been scanning and recording film since 1992 when we set up with prototype Kodak Lightning 4K scanners and recorders. Since then, we have been responsible for creating:

* The first film to be entirely scanned to digital files - Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the first film to be entirely scanned to digital files, restored/graded and then recorded back to film again.

* The first film to have significant sections digitised - Pleasantville was graded and recorded back to film.

* The first film to be entirely digitised, graded and filmed out - O brother where art thou? set the stage for today's current practice.

* The first production to adopt a Digital Intermediate workflow. Band of Brothers, the award-winning HBO series, became the workflow template for modern feature digital post production.

We continue to lead the field with innovation in scanning and recording services for both DI and visual effects, with Los Angeles based sister company &quot;Laser Pacific&quot;:http://www.laserpacific.com/ continuing the DI tradition with Digital Grading, Intermediate and Mastering Services.

Cinesite currently uses Filmlight's &quot;Northlight&quot; scanners and Arri's &quot;ArriSpeed&quot; Laser Recorders. Building on our long tradition of research and development in this field Cinesite uses unique database management and image processing software, developed in-house, to control the various processes involved.

    <description>Based at Shepperton Studios, Cinesite has built the impressive Hogwarts and environment models, and supervised Model Unit Photography for almost all instalments of the Harry Potter series of films, including the most recent Harry Potter &amp; The Half Blood Prince.

Cinesite has a range of expertise, all of which is vital for the production of world-class models:

h3. Construction

Model construction is an intricate and highly specialised process by a select group of the UK's foremost model makers, working with a wide range of materials to produce highly realistic models of all scales. This often involves working closely with Production Designers to seamlessly merge constructions into surrounding photography and ensure that the Art Direction is consistent with the look of the film.

h3. Photography

Lighting and photography of models is also highly specialised and integral to achieving convincing realism and sense of scale. Cinesite works closely with the UK's top Directors of Photography and Lighting designers, who understand the specific needs of lighting and filming models.

h3. Supervision

Cinesite's Director of Models Jose Granell is primarily responsible for all of our models work. He has expertise stretching back almost thirty years in the industry and has been recognised with two consecutive nominations for Outstanding Achievement in Models at the industry's annual Visual Effect Society awards.

h3. Digital Compositing

With extensive knowledge of working in the digital realm, Cinesite's models team understands how their work will digitally integrate in post production and always construct, prepare and shoot their models with this in mind.

h3. Production Management

Cinesite models are experts in managing entire model units, from the early bidding and storyboard stages through to management of the construction crew, photographic unit and pyrotechnics.

Initially, we are often approached at very early stages of production, discussing storyboards and artwork with the Director and Production Designer and continuing to do so throughout construction and Unit Photography. We also liaise closely with the digital effects providers and Visual Effects Supervisors, to ensure the integration of their work will be seamless in the later digital effects stage.

We also appreciate that efficient Production Management is essential to the successful integration of the model unit with multiple production departments. These can include Special Effects technicians, Camera and equipment suppliers, the Model Unit supervisor and the entire unit crew.

Creative Supervision of the Model Unit is managed by Cinesite's Director of Models Jose Granell. His expertise and knowledge of his craft are essential to the smooth outcome of every single production, and are responsible for consistently spectacular results.

The result of all this expertise is that Cinesite's models team have been responsible for some of the most memorable and realistic visual effects sequences to come out of the UK in recent years.

    <description>Cinesite's groundbreaking Transatlantic portal utilises a high speed data link between London and Los Angeles to allow for synchronised dailies sessions at both locations, as well as other services.

h3. Creative Dialogue

Cinesite's breakthrough data transfer service, running between Cinesite in London and a satellite suite at Kodak in Los Angeles, facilitates the access of our expertise more directly from the U.S.  This is improving the post production experiences of clients who choose to spread work between the UK and US.

The most popular use of this new service is in synchronised dailies sessions, between London and Los Angeles, which enable clients based in Los Angeles to have direct involvement in creative sessions taking place in London. The system was first used on the December 2008 Disney production Bedtime Stories and is currently being used for several projects in-house at Cinesite. Clients attend sessions in our Los Angeles suite, viewing identical shots simultaneously to those in the UK suite.

Colour management, data management and production scheduling systems have been matched and synchronised between both locations, to ensure the seamless quality of images.

The new data connection brings closer together the world-class visual effects of Cinesite and multi-award-winning digital intermediate, post production and multi-media services of Laser Pacific, which is also part of Kodak's Entertainment Imaging division.
